EU gives 30 million euros in humanitarian aid
BRUSSELS: The European Commission said Saturday it had given 30 million euros in humanitarian aid to help the most needy in Pakistan, including those hit by flooding that has killed at least 800 people.
"The European Commission has adopted a 30-million-euro (39-million-dollar) humanitarian aid decision to assist the most vulnerable people in Pakistan in urgent need of help," it said in a statement.
"Pakistan has been hit by terrible floods and more rain is forecast. Our thoughts are with those affected by them," Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva was quoted as saying.
"I am pleased that our decision to provide new humanitarian funding for the most vulnerable people in Pakistan will also be able to benefit the people, who have suffered from this disaster."
The United Nations has said almost a million people had been affected by the flooding.

Gilani says UK should condemn HR abuses in held Kashmir
KASUR: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that UK should also condemn human right''s violation in occupied Kashmir by Indian forces.
He was replying to a question about the comment of the British PM David Cameron, against Pakistan.
Talking to media men after inaugurating PEL transformers factory at Soay Aasil, the prime minister said Pakistan had strong armed forces, a sovereign parliament, an independent judiciary and a vibrant media. Then how the people would let anybody harm the country.
Pakistan is a sovereign state and no one can dare cast an evil eye on it, PM Gilani said.
Cameron during a visit to New Delhi had alleged the existence of terrorists'' network in Pakistan.
He said that it would be better to discuss international issues through diplomatic sources and added that the government of Pakistan would follow this policy.

Efforts being made to face flood threat: Qaim
KASHMORE: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that all out efforts are being made to strengthen the embankments of protective bands of the Indus River on emergency basis in order to face the incoming flood, the peak water flow about 800,000 cusecs(eight Lac) will reach at Guddu Barrage on August 4 and 05.
This he said while talking to mediamen at Guddu barrage in Kashmore-Kandhkot district, on Saturday.
The chief minister also said that safeguarding the lives and property is the responsibility of the local administration and in this regard relief camps were established in different districts.
He advised the people of Katcha areas to shift immediately to the safer places; the local administration will provide facilities to them in this regard.
The chief minister said that Pakistan Army is alert for the assistance of civil administration during the flood emergency and the Pak-Army will also monitor the flood situation in the province.
He also said that the rangers and police will increase the patrolling to ensure security to the officers/officials who will be on the flood duty.
The chief minister informed the pressmen that the amount of Rs. 400 million approved for the strengthening of the protective bunds of River Indus.
He also said that his 28 Sindh cabinet ministers were assigned to monitor the flood situation in their respective areas.
The chief minister also said that the purpose of his visit is to see the position of irrigation water at Guddu barrage and to visit the strengthen work of vulnerable points on the right bank of Indus River.
On the occasion Chief Engineer Guddu barrage Zafarullah Mahar brifed the Sindh Chief Minister regarding the flood situation and flow of water in the Indus River.
He said that eight vulnerable and sensitive points are on the left and right sides of River Indus out of which K.K. protective Bund, Thori Bund and Qadirpur loop bund are more sensitive.
The Secretary Irrigation and Power Shuja Junejo briefed the Sindh Chief Minister that the officers and officials of Irrigation department are working round the clock on the protective bunds in order to face the incoming flood.
Later, The Sindh chief minister along with provincial minister Irrigation and Power Jam Saifulla Dharejo, Minister for Revenue Jam Mehtab Dahar, MPA Haji Anwar Khan Mahar, RPO Sukkur Muhammad Ramzan Channa, DCO Kashmore Syed Abid Ali Shah, PPP leaders and workers visited K.K bund near Baddani town in Kashmore and Kandhkot district.
The chief minister Sindh directed all the DCOs of the province to ensure the shifting of people of Katcha areas to safer places immediately, so that their lives and properties could be safe guarded at every cost.

''High Flood'' to hit Sindh on Aug 4
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a fresh advisory regarding flood in different rivers and water levels in various dams and barrages.
Director General Dr Qamar uz Zaman Chaudhry said that as many as 980,000 cusec of flood water is passing from Chashma and the flood water at Taunsa would likely to remain 850,000 cusec and 950,000 during August 1st to 3rd.
At Mlthon Kot flood water of about 200,000 cusec would be added from Jhelum and Chenab rivers, whereas about 750,000 and 850,000 cusec would reach from Tunsa.
The flood water in Sindh at Guddu would start rising from 500,000 cusec to 600,000 cusec (High Flood) on August 4 and peak of (950,000 to 10,50,000 cusec) would (Exceptionally high Flood level) pass from Guddu sometime on August 6 and 7.
The flood water at Sukkur would also start rising to 500,000 to 600,000 cusec (High Flood level) on August 4 and would attain exceptionally High Flood level of 900,000 to 10,00,000 cusecs on August 7.
Inundation and riverine flooding in all low lying areas of Districts of Sukkur, Larkana, Nawabshah, Hyderabad, Nausheroferoze, and Ghotki is imminent.

Tax exemption announced for flood-hit KP areas
PESHAWAR: Provincial Information Minister, Mian Iftikhar Hussain on Saturday announced exemption of taxes for the flood-hit areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkwa and demanded of the federal government to declare the affected areas calamity-stricken.
Briefing mediamen about damage caused by floods in the province, Mian Iftikhar Hussain also announced to donate his current month’s salary for the help of people hit by devastating floods in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Similarly, he added, MPA Fazalullah of Shangla has announced a donation of Rs 100,000 for the same purpose.
Information Minister urged all the parliamentarians to announce donations and contributed in the relief fund set up by Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti.
He also stressed upon people to come forward and extend physical and financial help to their brethren who lost their houses and other belongings due to natural calamity.
Information Minister also appreciated the response and spirit of President Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Riaz Arshad who announced to provide machinery for opening of Motorway to restore road link between Peshawar and rest of the country.

More monsoon rains expected next week
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday predicted more monsoon rains during the next week and would start from August 2.
According to the press release issued here, Sindh, Punjab, Kashmir eastern parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and eastern parts of Balochistan would receive monsoon rains during the said period.
Director General Dr Qamar uz Zaman Chaudhry said that a fresh monsoon low pressure area after developing over Bay of Bengal now lies over central parts of India. This weather system would move towards Pakistan and approach our areas during the next 48 hours, he said.
Latest hydrological data indicate that Sindh specially areas along the Indus river would be badly affected due to extremely high flood conditions in the river Indus.

MQM asks Zardari to review UK visit
LONDON: MQM Chief Altaf Hussain has criticised the statements made by British PM David Cameron and advised President Asif Zardari to review his visit to UK keeping in mind the sentiments of the public.
MQM chief said that Pakistan has been alleged on an international level without reason. Cameron''s remarks regarding Pakistan''s role in war against terrorism are saddening, he added.
Pakistani security forces and civilians have given sacrifices in the war on terror yet the nation''s role was being questioned, Hussain said.

Indus River in high flood
PESHAWAR: There is high flood in all the rivers of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa while the Indus River has also grown rough at Attock Khairabad where water flow has reached 919000 cusecs.
Swat River is also witnessing high flood at Amandara where water is running at 500,000 cusecs. Moreover, Munda Headworks and Kabul River are in high flood at Warsak.

Shahbaz asks Zardari to scrap UK visit
MIANWALI: Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has asked President Asif Ali Zardari to cancel his UK visit and spend the money on rehabilitation of the flood affectees.
He was talking to media after visiting the Jinnah Barrage. The CM Punjab also announced compensation of Rs 5 million for the people of Mianwali and vowed to rehabilitate the areas hit by rains as soon as possible.
Kalabagh Dam has enormous economic value but we want to take all provinces along, CM Shahbaz said. He instructed the provincial bureaucracy to left no stone unturned in rebuilding the barrage.

Kalam floods sweep away 8 hotels, over 300 houses
MINGORA: The worst floods and rains in living memory have destroyed over 300 houses and 8 hotels in Kalam – Swat’s badly hit area, Geo News reported Saturday.
The collapse of connecting bridge to the Kalam valley and difficult terrain has left 8000 people stranded.
Pak Army continued its rescue and relief effort today besides shifting people to the safer places.
The inflow of floodwater into Swat river added devastating force to the water flow, eroding land on both sides which resulted in the demolition of 8 hotels located on both sides of the river besides destroying over 300 houses.
